Drop, Cancel, Withdraw

Dropping, cancelling, or withdrawing from a course depends on the course format.

Semester-based Courses

If you are a degree-seeking student, dropping, cancelling, or withdrawing from a course must be done in ConnectCarolina.
If you are a non-degree seeking student, contact us for more information on dropping, cancelling, or withdrawing from a course.
More information about dropping, cancelling, or withdrawing from a course can be found below and at the Registrar’s office.

DROP

Dropping a course assumes that you have other courses on your UNC-Chapel Hill schedule for the current term (semester or summer session). You can drop a course with credit to your financial account up to two weeks into the semester or three days into the summer session. Refer to the University Cashier for further details about financial refunds, please see the Cashier’s office.

CANCEL

Cancellation means dropping all courses on your UNC-Chapel Hill schedule for the term before classes begin. It is, in effect, the same as not having registered at all. No entry is made on your permanent record and 100 percent of your prepaid tuition and fees is refunded. Visit the cancellation page to learn more about University-wide policies.

WITHDRAW

Withdrawal is dropping all courses on your UNC-Chapel Hill schedule for the term (fall, spring, or summer) after classes have begun. You may be eligible for a prorated refund, depending on the date of withdrawal. Refer to the University Cashier for more details. Carefully read the withdrawal policy so you can make an informed decision to withdraw from the University.
